    Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - PRN 6AM- 2:30PM


    The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides laboratory testing and oversight for the patient population, and Proficiency Testings as needed.


    This role is also referred to as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), Clinical Scientist (CS) or Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT).


    Clinical and Support Duties

    • Collects and/or prepares human samples for analysis in a timely, efficient manner
    • Calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment
    • Recognized reagents or media from a prescribed procedure or from literature, including making necessary computations
    • Observes established safety measures including use appropriate of PPE
    • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media and products
    • Evaluates results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated
    • Follows prescribed procedures in performing tests
    • Asses the plausibility of laboratory results through consolidating data with common physiological conditions
    • Keeps supervisor informed of activities including unusual patient data or results
    • Uses computer to log in patients samples, perform inquires and print summaries
    • Provides age specific data on patients as noted above
    • Communicates with the family or significant other of the patients, as noted above, when necessary in compliance with HIPPA

     Health and Safety

    • Works in a manner that promotes safety; wears clothing appropriate to the performance of the job
    • Participates in OSHA required training
    • Follows universal precautions as appropriate for position; complies with Employee Health requirements for continued employment
    • Reports unsafe practices to management
    • Knows own role in case of an emergency


    Education and Training:  Baccalaureate degree in the clinical laboratory sciences from an accredited college or university. Credentialed in Laboratory Science (ASCP or AMT preferred) or Registry-eligible for a period of one year after graduation from an accredited laboratory science program.


    Experience:  Minimum of 1 year experience in laboratory science (may include clinical rotations). 


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

    • Must work well with patients
    • Must be able to develop and maintain good interdepartmental relations    
    • Must be self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
