Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - PRN All shifts


The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides laboratory testing and oversight for the patient population, as needed. Responsible for coordinating facility infection control program under supervision of the Hospital Clinical Services Coordinator. 


This role is also referred to as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), Clinical Scientist (CS) or Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT).


Clinical and Support Duties

  • Collects and/or prepares human samples for analysis in a timely, efficient manner
  • Calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment
  • Recognized reagents or media from a prescribed procedure or from literature, including making necessary computations
  • Establishes new ranges for controls
  • Observes established safety measures
  • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media and products
  • Evaluates results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated
  • Follows prescribed procedures in performing tests
  • Asses the plausibility of laboratory results through consolidating data with common physiological conditions
  • Keeps supervisor informed of activities including unusual patient data or results
  • Uses computer to log in patients samples, perform inquires and print summaries
  • Exhibits knowledge of basic development of patients as noted above
  • Provides age specific data on patients as noted above
  • Communicates with the family or significant other of the patients, as noted above, when necessary

 Health and Safety

  • Works in a manner that promotes safety; wears clothing appropriate to the performance of the job
  • Participates in OSHA required training
  • Follows universal precautions as appropriate for position; complies with Employee Health requirements for continued employment
  • Reports unsafe practices to management
  • Knows own role in case of an emergency

Infection Control                              

  • Carries out  hospital/clinic-wide infection control program, including implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines of the system
  • Monitors compliance with hospital/clinic-wide infection control related policies and procedures and regulatory body requirements
  • Monitors infectious diseases present in the hospital population, mode(s) of transmission, and recommended treatment
  • Promotes training of all employees regarding hand washing, Standard Precautions, and other appropriate infection control related information
  • Participates in hospital educational programs on health, safety, hazardous waste, etc.
  • Reports activities appropriately or as directed, to assigned committees


Education and Training:  Baccalaureate degree in the clinical laboratory sciences from an accredited college or university. Credentialed in Laboratory Science or Registry-eligible for a period of one year after graduation from an accredited laboratory science program.


Experience:  Minimum of 1 year experience in laboratory science (may include clinical rotations).  Experience monitoring infection control program compliance preferred.

  • Must work well with patients
  • Must be able to develop and maintain good interdepartmental relations    
  • Must be self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
